Brief

The Safer Somerset Partnership would like you to imagine you’re an influential YouTuber or Podcaster, and we want you to make a short podcast or video that will help spread the word to other young people about staying safe in the modern world.

Somerset is a safe place to live and we want to make sure it stays that way.  But what are the important things you, and other young people can do to keep yourself safe?

You might want your podcast to focus on online safety.  Think about the problems young people like you face when you’re using the internet or social media?  What are the dangers? And where should you go to find help?

Or maybe you’ll make a video on street safety; ask yourself what problems you and your friends come across when you’re out and about.  What can you do when you’re faced with a problem?  And how do you say ‘No’ if there’s something you don’t want to do?

There are lots of helpful videos and other resources here on the website to make sure you’ve got all the facts.  You’ll also find links to some other really useful websites too.

You don’t need a load of specialist equipment; in fact, you can make a really good video or podcast on your phone or tablet.  It’s the script that’s important.  Take time to make sure you include all the important information and that you’ve got a brilliant, creative idea to make it interesting to the people who will hear it.

Your podcast or video needs to be about one-minute duration and you need to send it to us by Thursday 27th February at the latest.

There are lots of other schools across Somerset taking part in this project and the best entries will be shared online.  And we’ve got some pretty cool prizes too.

So, what are you waiting for?  Get creative, have fun and we look forward to seeing your videos or hearing your podcasts soon.

Before You Start!

Please watch all the videos yourself before showing them to students – some contain distressing images.

  • Download and read the lesson plan – decide how you want to adapt it
  • Look at the ‘Resources’ tab to find out more information
  • The key elements of the workshop are:
  1. Learn and understand the issue
  2. Mind-map ideas
  3. Write a great script based on the information you’ve learned
  4. Decide who will perform the script and who will carry out technical roles such as recording or editing
  5. Record your script
  6. Think about what else you need for your finished advert (sound effects, music)
  7. Send your finished ads to us via the Upload button (top right) or via Dropbox, Google Drive or WeTransfer.  Our email is schoolsupport@collaboratedigital.com

Tips

Tip 1

Work together in groups of four or five – more minds will create something really special and interesting. Discuss what you’re being asked to do and brainstorm to come up with a brilliant idea.

Tip 2

Make sure you research the subject before you start writing. Use the resources here on the website and follow the links to relevant websites. Watch all the videos too, they’re packed full of useful information.

Tip 3

You don’t need loads of special equipment – you can record on a mobile phone or a tablet. There is free software available online if you want to edit your video – this article recommends some of the best. For free audio editing programmes take a look here.
