The Brief

Knife Crime

Knife crime is a growing problem across the whole of Bedfordshire and we’d like your help spread the word about the consequences of carrying a knife.

‘Knife crime’ is simply any crime that involves a knife.  If you’re under 18 then that includes even carrying a knife or trying to buy one.  It also includes threatening someone and the most serious crimes such as murder, robbery or burglary where a knife is used.

What about me?

Some young people say that they carry a knife for protection or to make them feel safer, but research has shown that you’re actually more likely to become a victim of crime if you’re carrying a knife.

And the consequences are pretty heavy too: not only do you put yourself at risk of serious injury, or being killed, you could also face a £5,000 fine and four years in jail.

The Challenge

Bedfordshire Police need your help.  We’d like you to make a short radio advert to spread the word to young people just like you about the dangers of carrying a knife.

Take a good look at the resources section to make sure you’ve got all the facts.

You don’t need a load of specialist equipment, in fact you can make a really good advert on your phone or tablet.  It’s the script that’s important.  Take time to make sure you include all the important information and that you’ve got a brilliant, creative idea to make it interesting to the people who will hear it.

There are lots of other schools across Bedfordshire taking part in this project and the best adverts will be shared online and broadcast on the radio too.

Deadline

Your advert needs to be about one minute duration and you need to send it to us by Thursday 7th December at the latest.

So, what are you waiting for?  Get creative, have fun and we look forward to hearing your ads soon.

Places in our workshops on 5th December in Bedford or 7th December in Luton are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Email schoolsupport@collaboratedigital.com  to book your students in (maximum 6 students per school).

Tip 1

Work together in groups of four or five – more minds will create something really special and interesting. Discuss what you’re being asked to do and brainstorm to come up with a brilliant idea.

Tip 2

Make sure you research the subject before you start writing. Use the resources here on the website and follow the links to relevant websites. Watch all the videos too, they’re packed full of useful information.

Tip 3

You don’t need loads of special equipment – you can record on a mobile phone or a tablet.
There is free software available online if you want to edit your video – this article recommends some of the best. For free audio editing programmes take a look here.
